Celebrity Engines

The Union Pacific Railroad has painted 6 locomotives in special paint schemes to honor some of the railroads the UP has gobbled up over the past 25 years or so. I saw my first one in person today. It is UP 1989 painted to honor the Denver and Rio Grande Western whose track runs between Denver and Pueblo as part of the joint line. It runs about a mile from my home and this is where I saw the 1989 today as the 4th unit of 4 on a northbound train.

The set of locomotives are all model SD70ACe built in 2005 and 2006. They are:

UP 1982 - for the Missouri Pacific
UP 1983 - for the Western Pacific
UP 1988 - for the Missouri - Kansas - Texas
UP 1989 - for the Denver and Rio Grande Western
UP 1995 - for the Chicago and North Western
UP 1996 - for the Southern Pacific

You can see pictures of them here.

Let me know which one you like best.

I would like to see one commemorating the Union Pacific itself.

How great to have seen one of these wonderful engines. Like the Katy and the Denver Rio Grande best. The red Katy seems very unique, and the star on the front represents the Lone Star state I imagine? What is the design on the lower front of the Denver-Rio Grande engine?

On the front of the Rio Grande engine is the modern D&RGW logo. On the side of the cab is the (very) old D&RGW logo. For more pictures of the engines, search on google for UP 1989 or whatever number you are interested in.
